At the outset I will tell you that the Mar Menor is the largest coastal saltwater lagoon in Spain, which is separated from the Mediterranean Sea by the strip of land 22 kilometers long, which is known as La Manga.

At present the Mar Menor and the Mediterranean Sea are joined by a natural opening located north of La Manga, and by an artificial one that was built next to the marina of Tomás Maestre.

From this circular viewpoint that is located in front of the nearby Deer Island, you have a 360-degree view that will allow you to understand the peculiar characteristics of this geographical enclave of the Region of Murcia.

Cabo de Palos is not only a geographical place of the environment of the Mar Menor where there is a large lighthouse and at his feet, a small cove with crystal clear waters, ideal place for snorkeling or scuba diving.

Specifically, you can sign up for a day of snorkeling, an activity that you can do for three hours in the coves of this natural area, where the aforementioned transparent waters are the result of the presence ofposidonia in this coastal area.

La Manga del Mar Menor is a tongue of land of just over 20 kilometers long, which separates the Mediterranean Sea from the Mar Menor. It extends from the Cabo de Palos lighthouse to the Parque de Las Salinas in San Pedro del Pinatar. Its width ranges between 100 and 1,200 meters.

It corresponds to Cartagena from the entrance to La Manga (km 0, we are talking about La Manga, because all the previous areas of Cabo de Palos and all the beaches of the Mar Menor in the southern area up to Los Alcazares belong to Cartagena), until almost km 4 in an area known as Monte Blanco corresponding to the beaches «La cala del Pino in the Mar Menor» and «Calnegre beach» in the Mediterranean Sea. From here to the end it is to the City Council of San Javier that corresponds to the maintenance of La Manga.

This curious administrative division makes La Manga a complicated entity to manage, so the two town halls must collaborate jointly in the maintenance of beaches, roads, etc. in what is known as the Consortium.
